A hard-fought victory for Lee Walker in his Albena debut
Lee Walker opened his campaign at the 2023 European Senior individual Championships in Albena (Bulgaria) with a hard-fought victory over Ville Pirila (Finland) in Group Q. Being the last player to start in the tournament the Welshman needed some time to adjust to the tables in Perunika Hall and found himself a frame down after missing a pot on the black.
Right at that time Walker’s buddy Mark Williams came at the arena to support him and his fortunes have changed quickly. Former Crucible quarterfinalist produced breaks of 47, 44 and 44 to complete the comeback.
On Wednesday Walker needs just a frame against Andrius Scerbakovas (Lithuania) to progress to the next round while despite the loss Pirila is already through.
Arthus Cachia (Malta) is through to the knockout stage after a 3:1 win over Darius Bublys (Lithuania). The result eliminated Bublys from contention for the next stage while alongside Cachia Joris Maas (Netherlands) is also through from Group K.
Graham Beardmore (England) is through as a Group S winner after beating Ebrahim Baghi (Austria) 3:0. The Englishman had a break of 46 in the second frame but survived the chaotic first and third to finish unbeaten in the group stage.
