Great night for the hosts
The Polish Association will be delighted tonight in Zielona Gora as they saw nine of their ten players progress into the Last 32 of the Mens Event. It’s quite a remarkable record for one country to have so many players left and many will feel they can progress even further after tonights displays.
The highest break of the night went to Poland’s Kacper Filipiak (above) who banged in a great 109 break in the last frame of his 4-1 win over Tom Limor and now faces a tough match against Ireland’s Robbie Murphy in the Last 32. In other matches there were 4-0 wins for Grzegorz Biernadski and Kamil Zubrzychi who rather amazingly had a 97-79 point win in the third frame of his match against Antonis Pollous.
4-1 victory’s followed for Adam Stefanow and Jaroslaw Kowalski while Marcin Nitschke and Krzysztof Wrobel were both made to work that little bit harder for their 4-2 wins especially Wrobel who had to fight back from 2-0 down.
One polish player who really had to fight for the win was young Mateusz Baranowski who was pegged back from 3-1 up to 3-3 before finally getting over the line 66-12 in the final frame against George Louka. The 15 year old will now face Ireland’s Jason Devaney in the Last 32.
The only other polish player in action tonight didn’t fair so well however as Patryk Maslowski lost out 4-1 to an in form Rhys Clarke who rattled in breaks of 76, 61 and 51 to take the win and set up what should be a great Last 32 match against John Sutton.
In other matches Mata’s Duncan Bezzina came back from 2-0 down to defeat Austria’s Paul Schopf 4-2 knocking in breaks of 63 and 87 along the way.
He was joined in the Last 32 by Duane Jones (pictured) who had a great 4-1 win over Michael Collumb and Andres Petrov who just edged out Mario Brincat from Malta after Brincat came back from 3-1 do force the decider.
Andres Ploner, Daniel Kandi, Roman Dietzel and John Whitty make up the remaining qualifiers tonight and will all be in action in on Tuesday at 10am where we should see some superb matches as we get down to the business end of the tournament.
