Morgan opens defence of title
Defending Masters Champion Darren Morgan clearly showed why he is the clear favourite to retain the title this morning as he swept aside his Romanian opponent Marius Ancuta 3-0 with ease.
Ancuta had no answer for Morgan’s scoring power as he knocked in breaks of 40, 67 and 75 as he kicked off his defence of the Masters title.
In other Masters matches Ireland’s Frank Sarsfield made it two from two as he had a solid 3-0 victory over Waldemar Matuszkiewicz while Rolf Jewtuch took his second win after coming back from 2-0 down against Pal Vantara.
Wins also for Urs Freitag and Mario Van Herk this morning completes the results for the Masters Section.
In the Men’s section ex-champion Alex Borg from Malta opened up his account with a commanding 4-0 victory over Simonas Dragunas (Lithuania) with the aid of 79 and 64 breaks. We also saw a 4-0 victory for Welsh hopeful Gareth Allen who saw off Jaroslaw Kowalski with a high run of 57 in what was his opening match in the event.
Another ex-champion Robin Hull also had a good win this morning winning 4-2 eventually after trailing 2-1 earlier in the match against Danny Eriksen.
In the Ladies section Tatania Vasilijeva continued her defence of her title with a solid 3-0 win over Olga Ustinova and we also saw wins for Diana Stateczny, Malgorzata Sikorska and Diana Schuler.
