Late drama pushes Bulgaria 1 into the quarters
Bulgaria 1 progressed to the quarterfinals of the Team Event at the 2023 European Championships in Albena (Bulgaria) after a late drama against Poland 3. The hosts needed four frames to be absolutely sure of a knockout spot but find themselves 2:1 behind after Michal Kotiuk and Jakub Chromy won a scrappy doubles frame against Viktor Iliev and Velian Dimitrov.
Then Iliev won the frame against Chromy and although Kotiuk knocked down a 55 break to complete the Polish victory, the final score 3:2 was enough for both teams to qualify for the quarterfinals.
In the meantime, Ireland 2 beat Wales 3:2 but it wasn’t enough for neither of them. Ireland 2 finished with a 6:9 frame difference while Bulgaria 1 and Wales both have a 7:8. But because of the head-to-head record the home team finished second.
Ukraine 2 pipped France 2 for the second place in Group B with a 4:1 win over Belgium. The Ukrainians finished with a frame difference of 9:6 while France 2 got the third place despite topping Israel 3:2 with an 8:7 ratio. In the quarterfinals later today Poland 1 will face Bulgaria 1, Poland 2 – Ukraine 2, Poland 3 – Malta 1 and Israel – Malta 2.
